Learn Portuguese
  • Most letters make the same sound in Portuguese as they do in English. Those letters are not on the Sound Map.
  • The 13 sounds that are not the same as English are on the Sound Map. Each new sound has a symbol below to help you remember the new sound.
  • When you see a symbol or a letter below a letter, make the sound BELOW.
  • Some Portuguese vowel sounds are made in the nose. To hear them, hold your nose as you say the vowel. With practice you will be able to do it without using your hand!

Sound Map 1 Front (right-click to save)

"A" makes 2 sounds:
  • An exclamation under it the sound is Ahhhh!
  • A pig's nose symbol under it, go to the nose and say Ahhhh.
"E" makes 2 sounds:
  • The small "a" with two dots inside the sound is "A" but in the nose.
  • "E" with a rocker below is a short "E" sound.

Sound Map 2 Front (right-click to save)

  • Two dots in the small "e" is the "E" sound in the nose.
  • Two dots in the small "o" is the "O" sound in the nose.
  • Exclamation under an "O" is a blend of "Ahhh" and "Oh" as in "Ought."
  • The triangle is the "oo" sound as in "Food."
  • The triangle with two dots in it, go to the nose.

  • A curly under the "R" is rolling on the tongue.
  • Three scratches underneath is scratchy in the throat.
  • The third symbol is a simplified version of your finger over your lips saying "shhhh."
  • The "Z" with a line through it is the sound "S" makes as in Asia.
